Here’s a little food for thought. Ever since I moved to this side of Brooklyn, you know, those precincts where the so-called projects lie, I could not quite overcome the branding of this, what turned out to be initially, really neat and homely feeling and looking mom and pop store. It was a takeout joint and it came nowhere close to the fare you would normally experience downtown. The brand? Good food takes time to prepare. And was it any good?
Yes, I thought. I became a regular customer. Not only was the food good, it tasted like it was made at home, it was pretty cheap in comparison to all the hundreds of takeout joints in this great metropolis. But two years later, well, over time actually, it all turned pretty stale and sour. And this brought another thought. Familiarity breeds contempt. It can be so dangerous when applying your mind to social media strategies and concepts all designed to show you how to get a lot of followers on Instagram.
These days, you’ve really got to put a lot of thought into the way you strategize going forward.
Your social media marketing campaign, let it be said, is not all about you. It’s got to be about what they want for themselves too. Fair enough, you have still got to sell your product, but you can still tailor your work in their direction. What product example could I use here? Okay, so I’ll go along with what I do for a living. I’m a wordsmith by trade. And one of the great joys of my social media life is being able to tell it like it is.
It is a flavorful cliché by now, but so be it. No fear, no favour. But the trick is being honest and true to yourself. If you are going to be making up stories, and that is still your right, then you had best leave some sort of disclaimer or clue that informs readers that this is pure fiction. Not all readers will have, as yet, developed their reading intellect to distinguish and, as we say, read between the lines. Nevertheless, no matter how blunt or objectionable you choose to be, do consider their feelings as well.
The opposite of this is alienation. And it can get pretty lonely in the social media world if you choose to stand out like a sore thumb. There is no need to be disrespectful and downright rude. And whisper gently in their ears and they will become willing buyers, and sellers, of your product. You get them to promote you while you work on your next project. It is called word by mouth advertising. As for good food taking time to prepare?
All good and well. But just remember that you’ve got to move really fast in preparing the ingredients. In case you haven’t noticed, active Instagrammers wait around for no one, not even me.
